Part of the issue might be that you have some several different teams that were involved in Mania. That might have caused issues for them on the back end, or cost for getting either of them back – or either of the two leads there of note (Whitehead aka Taxman or Thomley aka Stealth) might have wanted to do something new after a long time doing Sonic games and Sega might have decided not to bring them back due to part of the partnership not being there (there’s also a third company involved too).
Or maybe they are working on a big sonic project quietly with Sega
