There are very big differences between the two, however… Hollywood has a long history of excluding POC and casting white people in their roles instead (I finally got around to watching the new Mortal Kombat movie last night, and man did it feel good to not see a cheesy white guy with an obvious wig playing Raiden!), the opposite is not true… so it’s an apples to oranges comparison. We’re starting to move beyond that now, which is great, but the history of Hollywood doing that is still there, so when we cast white folks in POC roles, it gives the impression that we’re going back to those days of excluding them from those roles all together. I can understand how the younger generations of folks who have not lived in those days wouldn’t see it that way, though, since we are starting to make progress, and many of them have grown up seeing POC properly cast into their own roles.

It would be awesome if we one day move far enough past that dark history that it is no longer an issue who gets cast for what, but for now, it still is.
